After surprising most everyone in 1962 by posting a 86-76 record and finishing in third place (10 games out) in the then, ten-team, one division American League the Los Angeles Angels fell back into 9th place in 1963 with a 70-91 record, 34 full games out of first.

Note: from 1961-1964 the team was officially known as the Los Angeles Angels. A name change to California Angels took place prior to the 1965 season.

Bob Turley, Right-handed - the former 1958 Cy Young winner was in his final year of a brilliant 13-year career. A much needed stabling force for the youthful Angels' pitching staff he joined the club in October 1962... armed with a blazing fastball he struck out 1265 hitters in 1,712 career innings and posted a 101-85 W/L record with a 3.64 ERA.

Mel Nelson, Reliever, Throws LH, Bats Right-handed - after spending most of '62 in the US Military, he appeared in 36 in 1963, made three starts, collected one save and threw his fastball to fan 41 batters in 52 2/3 innings... broke into pro ball with Rochester back in '56. Mel Nelson career: 4-10 record in 93 games, 3 saves, 4.30 ERA.

Ken McBride, Starting Pitcher - one of the original expansion pitchers he joined the Angels in '61after pitching two years in Chicago... posted a 12-15 W/L in '61, 3.65 ERA in 241 2/3 innings... in 1962, McBride had a solid 11-5 mark, with a 3.50 ERA... in 1963 he worked 251 innings, completed 11-of-36 starts, 3.26 ERA and pitched with the Angels until '65, when he retired.

Bo Belinsky, Left-handed - pitched in the minors from '56-'61 before debuting in the big-leagues with the Angels in 1962, and compiled a 10-13 record, 3.56 ERA... a fun-loving, night-clubber Belinsky fell to 2-9 in 13 starts in 1963, striking out 60 in 76 2/3 innings. He pitched for various major league teams from '60-'70 and posted a 28-51 record, 4.10 ERA, 146G, 102GS, 14GC, 4 Shutouts, 2 Saves.

Paul Foytack, Starting Pitcher - a long-time veteran starter with Detroit, he won 15 games twice in his major-league career '53-'64... a well-regarded veteran he started 8 games of his 34 games with the Angels in 1963. Paul Foytack career numbers: 86-87, 4.14 ERA in 312G, 193GS, 63GC and 7 Shutouts.

Don Lee, Starter and Reliever - broke into the majors back in 1957 with Detroit... was traded to Angels before 1963 season began and pitched in 40 games, going 8-11, 3.68 ERA in 40 games, 22GS, 3GC, tossed 2 shutouts, and 89Ks in 154 innings. baseballhistorian.com - California Baseball History
