1970 San Francisco Giants - Rating The Players
The San Francisco Giants finished the 1970 season in third place in the NL West, going 86-76, .531 pct. This team had a few big name stars, but their roster includes many players who are now long forgotten. Perhaps one was your favorite player, or a long-lost uncle.

Below is information from our manager's old notebook:

Bobby Bonds - Center-fielder RH, Born: Riverside, California 3/15/1946, only 24-years-old, has speed to burn (48 stolen bases), Rates 4-Stars fielder .... Was the Giants leadoff hitter .... scored 134 runs in '70 .... powered 36 Ds, 10 Ts, 26 HRs and 78 RBIs. Popular player in SF area .... great major league future.

Bob Dietz - Catcher RH, Born: Crawfordsville, Indiana 9/18/1941 .... has played 5 years with the Giants..... had outstanding power numbers in '70 - crashed 36 doubles and 22 home runs, drove in 107 runs .... rates high as defensive catcher. Caught 148 games and batted .300.

Tito Fuentes - 2B, SS, 3B Switch-hitter, Throws RH .... Born: Havana, Cuba 1/4/1944 ... Fine defensive infielder, possesses strong throwing arm ... played 123 games in '70, hit 267, scored 49 runs. Plays to win, always hustling.

Ron Bryant - Pitcher LH, Born: Redlands, CA 1/25/45 25 years-old ... was 5-8, 4.78 ERA in '70 .... fanned 66 batters in 96 innings, walked only 38 ... Promising future .... rates 3+ Stars.

John Cumberland - Pitcher LH Born: Portland, Maine 5/10/1947 .... Appeared in 7 games with the Giants in 1970 .... looked sharp - went 2-0, 11 innings, 0.82 ERA .... Traded to SF on July 20, 1970 for pitcher Mike McCormick

Allan (Al) Gallagher - 3rd Baseman RH Born: SF, CA 10/19/1945 ... Rookie in 1970, played 109 games .... outstanding fielding shortstop, good arm .... likes to hustle .... batted .266 ... tab for long big league career.

Juan Marichal - Starting Pitcher RH Born: Dominican Rep. 10/20/1937 ... Veteran pitcher .... slipped to 12-10 in '70, has won 20 games in six different years .... Giants are counting on him to come back strong next season. In 1969, Marichal was 21--11 and led the NL with 2.10 ERA.

Gaylord Perry - Starting Pitcher RH Born: Williamston, North Carolina 9/15/1938 .... Joined the team in 1963, posted a 23-13 record in '70 ... led the NL in wins ... pitched 329 innings, 2nd straight year over 300 innings .... throws great change-up and some junk stuff ... does posses good fastball ... started 44 games, 3.20 ERA.

Willie Mays - Outfielder & 1st Baseman, Born: Westfield, Alabama 5/6/1931 .... Probably the best all-around major league player during his' prime .... the aging veteran, 39-years-old, hit 28 home runs, 83 RBIs in 1970 .... played in 139 games ... the 'Say Hey Kid' stills ranks No. 1 with fans across the nation .... "What a ballplayer!"

Frank Reberger - Pitcher RH, Born: Caldwell, Idaho 6/7/1944, 6'5", 205 pos. - Was 7-8, 5.57 ERA in '70, hurled 152 innings in 45 games .... struck out 117 batters but walked 98, tends to be a bit wild ... good fastball .... scouts rate high with note - must have better control to last in the big leagues.

Richard Robertson - Pitcher RH - Born: Albany, California, 10/14/1944, 6'3", 202 pos..... Pitched 184 innings, 41 games in 1970 ... posted a 8-9 record, 4.84 ERA .... 121 Ks along with 96 walks ... must cut down on bases-on-balls ... could be fine No. 3 starter next season.

Donald Mason - 2nd Baseman IF, Bats Left, Throws RH, Born: Boston, Mass. 12/20/1944 .... Outstanding defense At 2nd base ... good utility infielder but must learn to hit major league pitching ... played 46 games, batted .139.

Mike Davidson - Pitcher - 3-5, 6.50 ERA in 31 games

Don McMahon - Relief Pitcher - 9-5, 2.96 ERA in 61 games

Jerry Johnson - Pitcher - 3-4, 4.27 ERA in 33 games

Skip Pitlock - Pitcher - 5-5, 4.66 ERA in 18 games

Frank Linzy - Pitcher - 2-1, 7.01 ERA in 20 games
