Mattingly, Yanks Topple Angels 5-3
Sept. 2, 1985, baseballhistorian.com Newspaper Clipping- Don Mattingly lined two home runs, driving in three runs, as the New York Yankees topped the California Angels 5-3 yesterday in Yankee Stadium. Mattingly homered in the sixth inning when the Yankees scored three runs to tie the score. Mattingly and Don Baylor hit back-to-back homers in the seventh. In the past month (Aug 2-Sept 2) Mattingly has powered 13 homers, has hit two homers in a game four times, all since Aug 2. He now has 25 homers for the year and is leading the majors with 108 RBI's. baseballhistorian.com archives

 

Tommy John & Joe Niekro 1986
Tommy John, age 43, and Joe Niekro, 41, pitched a double-header for the New York Yankees and became the first 40-plus teammates to start a double-header since September 13, 1933. Pitching against the Seattle Mariners, Tommy John lost the first game 1-0 and Joe Niekro won the second game 3-0. June 20, 1987 Baseballhistorian.com - Newspaper Clippings - The New York Yankees scored five runs in the top of the 13th inning to topple the Boston Red Sox 10-5. Dan Pasqua and Mike Pagiliarulo each hit home runs in the top of the 13th for the winning Yankees. Pasqua also had 4 RBIs. Willie Randolph lined 4 hits in 5 at bats, scored 3 runs and made an oustanding play at second base to aid the Yankees in their win. By virtue of their win, the Yankees stayed in 1st place in the AL East with a 42-25 record while the Red Sox dropped to 29-37. Attendance in Fenway Park 33,835, Time of Game 5:02.

Second Place Finish New York Yankee Baseball History
The 1986 New York Yankees ended the season at 90-72, second place in the AL East, 5 1/2 games behind. Owner George Steinbrenner signed manager Lou Piniella to a new 2-year contract for 1987.

Baseball Players

The Yankees were led by their star first baseman, Don Mattingly, who became only the 10th player in history to finish with at least 200 hits, a .350 average, 30 homers, and 100 RBIs. Mattingly was runner-up in the Most Valuable Player voting and put up numbers of .352 BA, 238 hits, 31 HRs and 113 RBIs.

The pitching staff of 1986 was led by starting pitcher Dennis Rasmussen, 18-6, 3.88 ERA and reliever Dave Righetti, who set a major league record with 46 saves.

Their All-Star second baseman, Willie Randolph batted .276, was 3rd in the league in walks and 6th in on-base-pct. Center-fielder Rickey Henderson stole 87 bases, hit 31 doubles, 28 homers and scored a league high 130 runs. Baseball Historian Biography

Left-hander Ron Guidry arrived on the scene as a rookie Yankee' hurler in 1977, went 16-7, 2.82 ERA, pitched 5 shutouts in 210 innings.

With an explosive 95 mph fastball and a wicked slider that burst down at the last second straight over home plate, Guidry had one of the greatest years in baseball history for the Yankees in 1978.  That year, Guidry was 25-3, and his .893 winning pct is the highest in history for 20 game winners. He hurled nine shutouts, tying Babe Ruth's American League's record for left-handers, and his 248 strike outs broke the great Yankee pitcher Jack Chesbro's 74 year old team record. Guidry won his first 13 games in route to his 25 victories. On June 17, he struck out 18 California Angels. He was the unanimous choice for the Cy Young Adward and finished second to Boston's Jim Rice in the MVP voting. In 1979, Guidry was 18-8, 2.78 ERA; in 1980, 17-10, 3.56 ERA. From 1977-1985, Guidry won 154 games, the most in the majors. In 1983, his record was 21-9, and in 1985 topped 20 wins again, going 22-6. The following year his arm went sour and his last three seasons he was a combined 16-23. Ron Guidry career: 170-91, .651 pct, 3.29 ERA, 368 G, 323 GS, 95 GC, pitched 26 shutouts, allowed just 2198 hits in 2392 innings, 1778 K's, 633 walks, .244 opponents batting average, .294 on-base-pct,. His .651 winning percentage is the 9th highest in this century.
