The AL East leading New York Yankees (31-21) routed the AL West leading Texas Rangers (30-21) in New York City today. Catcher Jorge Posada led the heavy-hitting Yankees with 4 RBIs in a 3-for-4 night, including his 7th homer of the season off fastball reliever Warner Madrigal. DH Hideki Matsui went 2-for-5, including his 8th homer of the year in the 4th inning off Rangers rookie relief pitcher Derek Holland.

New York's All-Star shortstop Derek Jeter had 3 singles in 4 trips to the plate and scored his 1,500 career run. The Yankees captain is batting .319 for 2009.

Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett (4-2 with a 4.69 ERA) coasted thru 7 innings, striking out 8 Texas players. He notched the victory with stats of 8-hits, 3-runs and a walk. Relievers Tomoko and Vergas each followed A.J. Burnett by pitching one inning of hitless baseball.  

Rangers starter Vicente Padilla who was 14-8 in 2008, was rocked by the Yankees bats for 7-hits and 7-runs in 3.2 innings. Born in Nicaraqua, Vicente Padilla 2009 stats are 3-3 w/l with a 5.57 ERA. Teammate Nelson Cruz sent a A.J. Burnett fastball with 2 men on base into the outfield stands for his 15th homer of the year. Nelson Cruz now has 39 RBIs for the year.
