Cincinnati Reds Baseball History

Cincinnati baseball fans were not pleased after their Red Stocking team fell from a solid 83-67 record in 1899 down to a 62-77 mark and finished in 7th place in the then 8-team National League. Prior to the start of the 1900 season, former long-time major league shortstop Bob Allen, who was managing in the minors, was hired to manage the Red Stockings team.
However the team compiled a .266 batting average, the 7th lowest in the NL, and its 3.83 earned run average per 9 innings was 6th worst.

And after the 1900 season, manager Bob Allen was fired.

Bob Allen, born in Marion, Ohio, made his reputation as a hard-aggressive playing shortstop for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1890 thru 1894 and later one season with the old Boston Braves, 1897.

Jake Beckley heated up a cold offense. If there was a bright light for Cincinnati’s offense during 1900, it was Hall of Fame first baseman Jake Beckley. A master batsman he batted a robust .341 and was 5th in the National League with 94 RBIS. Jake Beckley played 20 seasons, 1888 thru 1907, in the majors. He batted over .300 13 times and compiled a .309 career batting average. Jake Beckley lashed out 2,930 career hits, including 476 doubles and 246 triples. A very fine fielder, he also holds the record with 23,709 putouts by a first baseman, and his 2,376 games at first base is second only to Hall of Fame member Eddie Murray.

To be sure outfielder Jimmy Barrett also supplied some key hits during the 1900 season. A leadoff hitter, he contributed a .316 batting average, stole 44 bases and scored 114 runs, 3rd highest in the league.

Heinie Peitz was a highly regarded defensive catcher and a capable batsman, .271 lifetime. Heinie Peitz played 16 seasons in the majors, nine years with Cincinnati. He batted over .300 two straight seasons for the Reds, .305 and .315 in 1901-02. A fans favorite he was a quick-stepping base runner and stole 91 career bases.
