After finishing in 2nd place in 1940, Dodgers fans eagerly awaiting the 1941 Opening Day. The arrival of General Manager Larry MacPhail from Cincinnati in 1938 started the Brooklyn Dodgers on their way. The flamboyant Larry MacPhail and hard-driving driving manager Leo the Lip Durocher

Larry MacPhail brought night baseball, radio and television and hundreds of thousands of new fans to Brooklyn’s Ebbets Field. The rebuilding of the team began with the acquisition of power-hitting first baseman Dolph Camilli from Phillies for a still untried rookie first baseman, Eddie Pepper, Morgan, and cash $$$ in 1938 and climaxed in 1940 with the debut of a pair of standout rookies, shortstop Pee Wee Reese and outfielder Pete Reiser.

The Dodgers began the 1941 season by dropping its first three games to the hated New York Giants. But the combative Leo Durocher soon got the Dodgers winning; meanwhile, MacPhail landed second baseman Billy Herman on May 6, 1941 from the Cubs for ss/2b Johnny Hudson and outfielder Charlie Gilbert plus $65,000 – a huge sum during this era.

The pennant race was two-team duel between Brooklyn and the St. Louis Cardinals, settled only on September 25 when the Dodgers clinched the flag by 2½ games. Doug Camilli was the NL MVP, pacing the NL with 34 Hrs and 120 RBIs; the batting title was nabbed by the speedy Pete, .343, who also led in runs (117), doubles (39, tied with Johnny Mize), triples (17), total bases (299), and slugging (.558).

Outfielders Joe Medwick (318, 18 HRs) and Dixie Walker (.311) led the offense, while pitchers Kirby Higbe (22-9, 3.14) and Whitlow Wyatt (22-10, 2.34) tied for the league lead in victories; Kirby Higbe topped the NL in games (48) and Whitlow Wyatt led in shutouts (7). Pitcher Hugh Casey (14-11, 3.89) was a standout relief ace.

However, Dodgers fans were disappointed in the 1941 World Series when the Yankees used superior pitching to stymie Brooklyn’s power and won 4 games to 1.

18 pitchers and 21 position players played for Leo Durocher’s 1941 pennant winning Brooklyn Dodgers.
