Derek Lowe started and won his 3rd straight opening day games, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 2-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. Derek Lowe painted the corners of the plate with his sinker ball for the visiting Braves, scattered 3 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 6 SO in 5 2/3 innings.
Atlanta relievers held the Nats scoreless the rest of the way – Eric O’Flaherty 1 IP, Pete Moylan 1/3 IP, Jonny Venters 1 IP and Craig Kimbrel 1 IP. Craig Kimbrel threw 95 mph fastball and struckout 2 of the 3 batters in the 9th and collected a save.
Atlanta’s all-star Chipper Jones went 2-4 and scored a run in the first inning on Brian McCann RBI single. Teammate Jason Heyward was 1-for-2, including a home run in the 2nd inning.
The losing pitcher was Washington’s Livan Hernandez, who hurled solid baseball. He yielded 4 hits, 2 run in 6 1/3 innings and at one point retired 15 straight batters.
