Hope is the one of the things baseball fans possess. In a game played with a bat and ball, each team tries to outplay the other with pitching, hitting and defensive. So it was back in 1971 too.

 

Baseball Highlights 1971 

 

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles in the 1971 World Series. Pirates starting pitching Steve Blass pitched a complete game 4-hit, 2-1 victory in Game 7. It was the second win of the Series for Steve Blass. Future Hall of Fame right-fielder Roberto Clemente lined a bases empty homer in the 4th inning. It was his 2nd homer of the World Series.

 

In 1971 the Baltimore Orioles became the first major league team ever to have four pitchers win 20 games or more – Pat Dobson … Dave McNally … Mike Cuellar and Jim Palmer.

 

Pitcher Ray Culp of the Red Sox worked the most innings for Boston – 242 innings. He compiled a 14-16 record with a 3.61 earned run average per 9 innings (ERA)………….. Detroit Tigers pitcher Fred Scherman had an 11-6 record with a 2.71 ERA in ’71…. Vida Blue led the American League in ERA with 1.82…. Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver led the National League with a 1.76 ERA. ….

 

Catcher John Bateman belted two grand slam home runs in 1971. John Bateman hit 10 homers for the year and for the 2nd consecutive season played in 139 games for the Montreal Expos…….. In 1971 Amos Otis 52 and Freddie Patek 49 of the Kansas City Royals combined to steal 101 bases, the most by teammates in a single season since 1917 when Cleveland Indians Ray Chapman 52 and Bob Roth 51 notched 103 stolen bases… Amos Otis stole 5 bases on Sept 7, 1971.

 

Jose Cardenal, St Louis / Milwaukee, and Bert Campaneris of Oakland are first cousins…. Billy Cowan, outfielder for California Angels hit .304, .276, .276 the last 3 seasons – ’69-71…. Baltimore’s catcher Andy Etchebarren has played in 530 games the last 6 seasons…. Bob Johnson, Pittsburgh Pirates, was the winning pitcher of this year’s Game 3 NL Playoffs. Bob Johnson had a 9-10 record for 1971.

 

Relief Pitcher, lefty Rob Gardner played for 9 different minor league teams since 1963, and 5 different major league teams - New York Giants 1965-66, Chic Cubs ’67, Cleveland 1968, Yankees ’70-71, Oakland A’s 1971 and is still going strong.

 

Red Sox Rico Petrocelli, joined Boston in 1963. In 1971 he was swifted to third base and went on to set a major league record with 77 consecutive errorless games. In ’71 Rico Petrocelli had a .251 batting average with 24 D 4 T 28 HR.
