Lefty O’Doul managed the SF Seals from 1934 thru 1951 … He was regarded as one of the top field managers in the history of the game. In 1948, the reported attendance was 670,000.

 

Note: Many of the players profiled below played in the Major League before or after 1950

Reviewing the 1950 San Francisco Seals Players

 

1950 Pitchers

 

Chet Johnson was the high winner on the team, 22-13 w/l and completed 22 of 39 starts. His 164 strikeouts led the team. He pitched a remarkable 310 innings. 3.51 ERA with 2 shutouts.

 

Al Lien was a twenty game winner, 20-13 and completed 18 of 38 starts, plus 8 relief appearances. His 276 innings were second highest on Seals. Pitched 3 shutouts. At 35 years old Al Lien was a veteran of many years of pitching in pro baseball.

 

Harry Feldman had an 11-16 record with a 4.38 ERA in 1950. A durable mound master he completed 12 of 24 starts and relieved in 18 others. Rang up 78 SO in 230 innings with one shutout. 

 

Cliff Melton was part of manager Lefty O’Doul Big Four starting rotation. He was 11-18 with a 5.10 ERA and completed 14 of 35 starts, 10 RG and one shutout. Pitched 240 innings.

 

Elmer Singleton compiled a 5-10 w/l record with a solid 4.24 ERA. He appeared in 29 games, started 12 and completed 4. He was 32 years old and had one of the fastest pitches in the Pacific Coast League. Elmer Singleton struck out 79 in 119 innings, average 6 per 9 innings.

 

Con Dempsey was aggressive on the mound and had a 9-9 record with a 4.36 ERA. He struck out 100 batters in 194 innings. Appeared in a team high 55 games, made 17 starts, and completed 3.

Manny Perez 9-8 w/l with a 3.33 ERA in 19 starts, 9 completed plus 11 relief games. 162 innings. He was one of the leading SF Seals pitchers for a few years.

 

Infielders

 

Dario Lodigiani Third Baseman / 2B was one of best hitters on the Seals. Excellent bunter, great patience in batters box. Batted .300 with 25 doubles, scored 88 runs. Walked 69 times in 633 plate appearances, struck out only 25 times in 150 games. 

 

Don Lang Third Baseman hit .264 with 24 extra base hits in 114 games. Veteran player, 35 years old. Had a .372 on base percentage.

 

Jack Conway Shortstop had a rapid throwing arm and was considered one of the top prospects for the major leagues. Batted .238 in 112 at bats.

 

Roy Nicely Shortstop fine defensively, lacks hitting skills. Batted .194 in 314 plate appearances, 11 extra base hits. 32 years old.

 

Jimmy Moran Second Baseman was one of the defensive leaders in the Western Leagues during this era. Fielded a sterling .982 fielding percentage in 158 games, 490 putouts, 399 assists, 86 double plays, just 15 errors. Batted a solid .277, 27 extra base hits in 627 plate appearances. 26 years old.

 

Les Fleming First Baseman An excellent bad ball hitter. One of the strongest men in the Pacific Coast League. Les Fleming led the team in the following 32 doubles, 25 home runs, and 138 RBIs. Hit .292 and walked 126 times in 771 plate appearances.  

 

Ray Orteig Catcher batted .300 with 22 doubles, 6 homers, 49 R and 49 RBIs in 130 games. Clutch hitter, won games with bat. 163 total bases. Fielding 62 assists and a .985 percentage.

 

Roy Partee Catcher .232. Solid defensively behind home plate. Fielding percentage was .988. Batted .232.

 

Outfielders

 

Brooks Holder played 142 games and batted .295 with 26 doubles, 11 homers, walked 121 times and compiled a team leading 113 runs. Leadoff hitter.

 

Don White endless on-field hustling. Posted a .300 batting average and a .968 fielding pct in 147 games. 31 years old.

 

Joe Grace first class athlete. Led the Seals with a robust .335 batting average, lined 22 doubles, 13 home runs, scored 92 runs and had 91 RBIs. Stole 4 bases. Led team with a .992 fielding pct.

Jackie Tobin batted .243, stole a team leading 12 bases. 29 years old and fastest runner on the Seals.

 

Dino Restelli outfielder, age 25 batted .341 in 99 G

 

Neill Sheridan batted .288 with 18 DS, 12 Hrs, 51 Runs and 54 RBIs.

 

Worth Looking into – many of the Seals players proudly served in the U.S. Military during World War II.

 

Mike Baxes age 19, batted .059 in 6 games … Bill Bradford age 28, batted .250 in 5G … Tommy Bridges age 43, batted .000 in 4G … Dick Briskey age 22, batted .310 in 27G … Ralph Buxton age 39, .083 in 38G

 

Harry Feldman age 30, pitcher batted .101 in 46G … Al Jacinto age 26, batted .118 in 13G… Roy Jarvis age 24, batted .239 in 16G… Dale McCawley outfielder age 26, batted .337 in 26G …

Ralph Buxton middle reliever had a 6-3 w/l record in 77 innings, spanning 38 games. Had 5.03 ERA. 28 years old.

 

Steve Nagy 3-4 with a 6.19 ERA with 30Ks in 10 starts, 13 G, 48 innings

 

Lou Grasmick 0-1 in 3 innings… Dick Larner 0-1 in 2 innings … Pete Modica, age 26, 0-0 in 0.2 innings… Xavier Rescigno, age 37, with a 0-1 record in 6 innings… George Toolson, age 27, 0-0 record in 3 games, 6 innings.
