Frankie Kelleher, Hollywood Stars. The former Cincinnati Reds player, 1942 –43, left baseball to serve in the US Military during World War 2 and returned to baseball in the PCL AAA on the West Coast. In 1950 playing with the Hollywood Stars of the PCL in 174 games he gathered 345 putouts, throw out 16 opposing base runners (assists) had 2 double plays and made just 3 errors and led all starting PCL outfielders with for a outstanding fielding percentage of .992 percentage.

 

Al Lyons, Seattle Rainiers. The former NY Yankees 1946-47, Pitts 1947 and Boston Braves 1948 outfielder also alternated as a reliever pitcher with all three ML teams, appearing in 100 innings in 39 games. Playing in 1950 with the Rainiers, Al Lyons grabbed 389 putouts, had 7 assists, 1 DP made just 3 errors in 156 games for a .992 fielding percentage.

 

Fuzz White, 1950 Sacramento Solons. A long time professional baseball player, he played parts of 2 years in majors, 1940 St. Louis Browns, service in US Military and played with some with NY Giants in 1947. In 1950 for Sacramento in affiliation with the Chicago White Sox, the 34 year-old Fuzz White still had speed and a strong throwing arm. He notched 399 putouts, 9 assists, 2 DP, made 5 errors in 172 games for a very fine .988 fielding percentage.

 

Les Layton, Centerfielder 1950 LA Angels in affiliation with the Chicago Cubs. Played in majors with old New York Giants in 1948. At age 28 in 1950, Les Layton still had speed afoot, a rocket of a throwing arm and made over the shoulder catches look routine. In 1950 with LA of PCL AAA he caught 244 outs, throw out 13 base runners, 3 DP and made just 3 errors for a .988 fielding average.

 

Jim Busby, Centerfielder, 1950 Sacramento Solons. 23 years-old and rated the top centerfielder among all minor leaguers. The future White Sox centerfielder could beat 99 % of the baseball players in a foot race and caught every baseball hit in the outfield gaps during his 12 seasons in the majors, late-1950 thru 1962. For the Seals in 1950, Jim Busby caught 283 putouts, had 15 assists, 5 D, just 2 errors in 106 games for a outstanding .993 fielding percentage, the second highest in the PCL for baseball outfielders who played in 100 or more games.

 

Cecil Garriott, 1950 Los Angeles Angels of PCL. After proudly serving in World War 2 he saw limited playing time with the Chic White Sox in 1946. One of the leading defensive fielders, the strong armed Cecil Garriott in 1950 hauled in 328 putouts, had 9 assists, 4 DP, made just 2 errors in 124 games f or a stunning .994 fielding pct, the highest in the PCL for baseball outfielders who played in 100 or more games.

Honorable Mention

 

Earl Rapp, 1950 Oakland Acorns/Oaks. Born in Corunna, Michigan USA. His fielding helped the Oakland Oaks win the 1950 PCL pennant with a 118-82 record. That season Earl Rapp ran down 348 flyouts, had 15 assists, 2 DP and just 5 errors for a .986 fielding average. Earl Rapp played in the ML in 1949, 1951 and 1952.

 

Joe Grace, 1950 San Francisco Seals born in Gorham, Illinois USA. He broke into the ML with the old St. Louis Browns in 1938 and one of the American League’s leading players thru 1941 prior to serving in the US Military 1942-1945, returned to big leagues and was traded to Washington Senators in ’46, played there in ’47. In 1950 with the Seals Joe Grace had 222 putouts, 15 assists, 3 DP, just 2 errors in 114 games for a .992 fielding percentage.

 

Clarence Maddern, 1950 Los Angeles Angels. A sure handed outfielder, he played 4 years in majors, 3 with Cubs, 1946, 1948-49 and one with the Cleve Indians 1951.  Playing in the Pacific Coast League in 1950 with LA Angels, an affiliate of Chic Cubs, Clarence Maddern posted 309 putouts, 13 assists, made 5 errors, 2 DP in 148 games for a .985 fielding average.

 

Ralph Hodgin, 1950 Sacramento Solons Outfielder, 1950 Sacramento Seals. The 35 year-old, outfielder played 6 years in ML, the last five with White Sox 1943-1948. A well-regarded, sure-handed fielder, Ralph Hodgin caught 275 putouts, had 15 assists, 2 DP, made 4 errors in 145 games.

 

Joe Brovia, 1950 Portland Beavers born in Davenport, California USA. He possessed a rocket for a throwing arm and was one of the leading outfielders of the PCL during the early 1950s. Joe Brovis pulled in 281 flyballs, led the league with 20 assists, 1 DP. Made 5 errors in 185 games and had a solid .984 fielding pct. He played with Cincinnati Reds in 1955.
