June 9, 1956 Brooklyn tops Cincinnati 8-5 in 10 innings

 

Cincinnati - with 12,100 attendance on a sunny Saturday 6.9.1956

 

The Brooklyn Dodgers, the 1955 World Series Champs, played championship baseball yesterday. They built a 5-0 lead after 7 innings, then after their opponents, the Cincinnati Reds scored 4 times in the 8th and tied it in the ninth, the Bums of Brooklyn scored three runs in the top of the 10th – then held on to win 8-5. 

 

Gil Hodges doubled and homered for Brooklyn.

 

Brooklyn’s starter Sal Maglie (former star pitcher for the NY Giants) had a 4-hit, shutout going into the last of the eight. Bob Thurman pinch-hitting lined a fastball from Maglie for a single, Johnny Temple popped out, Frank Robinson singled, loading the bases, Gus Bell made out and with two outs, Reds strongman, first baseman Ted Kluszewski hit a grand slam homer, making the score 5-4 Bums still up. Clem Labine now pitching for Brooklyn and he got Wally Post to make out.

 

Eddie Bailey pinch-hitting in the last of the ninth, tied the game with his second homer in two days off Clem Labine. It was Ed Bailey’s 7th homer of 1956.

 

The 10th inning featured Dodgers RBIs by Jackie Robinson (a sacrifice fly pinch-hitting), Clem Labine and Gino Cimoli.

 

The winning pitcher was reliever Clem Labine 4-1 who gave up one hit in 2.1 innings.

 

Cincinnati reliever Hersh Freeman had 4 straight wins to open 1956 and with this loss his record also is 4-1.
