1953 Boston Red Sox Pitchers Bios:

Mel Parnell, Left-handed - one of only four pitchers in the AL that won twenty games in 1953, the mound-master had a 21-8 record, and his 3.06 ERA was 7th best in the league. Noted for his sharp breaking curve ball, Parnell scattered just 217 hits in 241 innings, struck out 136 and walked 116, and had a fine .239 opponents batting average.

Ellis Kinder, Right-handed - a great relief artist, was called on 69 times in '53, had a fine 10-6 record, posted an excellent 1.85 ERA, rang up 27 saves, and allowed 84 hits in 107 innings and posted a low .215 opponents batting average.

Mickey McDermott, Left-handed - born in Poughkeepsie, NY the hard throwing, lefty debuted in the majors with Boston in '48. In 1953, Maurice McDermott chalked up a compelling 18-10 record and his ERA of 3.01 was 6th best in the AL. He yielded only 169 hits in 206 1/3 innings, and gave up only 9 homers all year - while pitching half his games at Fenway Park.

Willard Nixon, Right-handed - completed 5-of-15 starts, hurled a shutout, and relieved in 8 other games while posting a 4-8 mark, a 3.93 ERA in 116 1/3 innings, and struck out 57 batters. Debuted with Boston in 1950.

Ike Delock, Right-handed - was big winner for Scranton in minors in '51 - going 20-4 with 5 shutouts. Was 4-9 in his rookie season in '52 with Boston. In 1953 Delock was used mainly out-of-the bullpen, appearing in 23 games, started one, and struck out 22 in 48 2/3 innings.

Bill Henry, Left-handed - in his second season with Boston, he completed 4-of-16 starts, hurled a shutout, while posting a 5-5 mark, 3.26 ERA and the fast baller fanned 56 in 85 2/3 innings of work.

Hershel Freeman, Right-handed - the 6ft, 3inch - 220-pounder debuted with Boston in '52, pitching in 4 games. He made 16 relief appearances in '53 along with 2 starts and had a 1-4 record in 39 innings.

Bennett Flowers, Right-handed - in his first full season in the big leagues (1953) the flame-thrower hurled in 32 games, completed 1-of-6 starts, tossed a shutout and collected 3 saves in 79 1/3 innings of work. Freeman struck out 36 batters, walked 24 and had a 1-4 record.
