Al Rosen; 3rd Base
Al
Rosen, Cleveland Indians, 1950-1957. Short major league career,
but Al was one of the top power hitters of the early 1950's.
In 1950, Rosen set a major league record for home runs for a
rookie, blasting 37; to lead the league.....and drove in 116
runs ...batting .287. In 1953, Al
Rosen was the first unanimous choice in baseball history for
Most Valuable Player. Al's total for 1953....
led the league in homers, 43; ...runs scored, 115; .... R.B.I.'s,
145. He came in second in batting average .336; one half
point under leader Mickey Vernon, Wash. Senators. Good fielder;
as he led league twice at 3rd base for assists. Al
was MVP in the 1954 All-Star game, played in Cleveland.
Rosen played with a broken finger in the All-Star game but still
hit 2 homers and had 5 R.B.I.'s, a major league record for All-Star
games. Rosen was 26 years old as a rookie and
a sore back from an auto accident plus the broken finger made
him retire at age 32. He drove in over 100 runs - 5 diff
times. Led the American League in home runs -- twice.
Led the league in R.B.I's -- twice. In 1953, Al Rosen
had a .613 slugging average. In 1044 games, Rosen had 717 R.B.I.'s.
