Best Opening Day Player and Stats
The following player had one of the best opening day performances in baseball history. What great opening day stats, memories, and the start to a new season. One of the best opening days in baseball history.

Johnny Bench - Cincinnati Reds

1968 - Johnny Bench, age 20, started catching for the Cincinnati Reds.  Playing in his first year, John, displayed his special talents; both in defense and offense. Bench blasted 40 doubles, 15 homers, 82 RBIs while batting .275.

His defense caught the baseball world's fancy. Bench had a great ability to handle pitchers and throw out would be base stealers. Two years later Johnny Bench hit 45 home runs and knocked in 148 runs and was voted Most Valuable Player. Bench is a member of "the Hall of Fame".
