can forget this exciting, popular, and all-around ballplayer?
Starting in 1972, Lopes was an important man in the success
of the Dodgers with his hustling, fine defensive play and
great base stealing. He led off in the batting order
and always seemed to be on base ( his on base pct was well
over .300 every year ). On Aug. 20, 1974, Lopes hit a single,
double and three (3) home runs all in one game (15 total bases)
at Cubs' Wrigley Field. His style of ball playing helped the
Dodgers win the National League pennant in 1974.
Davey Lopes set a major league record
in 1975 with 38 straight successful stolen bases, and ended
the season with 77 stolen bases, while scoring 108 runs.
In 1976, he stole 63 bases and in 1977 as leadoff man, Lopes
drew 73 walks, with a .283 batting average. Davey Lopes
turned slugger in 1979 as he hit 28 homers, scored 100 runs,
walked 97 times and had an on base pct of .373. Lopes was
a great player and his winning style of play made him a true
All-Star.
