Appling - Chicago White Sox
Opening Day - 1949. Luke Appling, at the age of 42, started
the season at shortstop. Appling played 142 games that year,
scored 82 runs, and batted .301. Noted for his ability to
foul off pitch after pitch; Appling drew 121 walks and only
struck out 24 times.
A favorite of the fans , who would cheer "Luke"
after every pitch, Appling played his entire "Hall of Fame"
career with the Chicago White Sox.
