After finishing second in the NL East in 1987 the New York Mets acquired pitcher David Cone from the Kansas City Royals prior to the 1988 season openers. The right-hander fastball reliever posted a 5-6 W/L record during his two-year pitching stint with KC. Due to injuries to the Mets starting pitching staff, Cone was moved into the starting rotation and responded to the call with a sensational year. He went 20-3, struck out 213 batters and allowed just 10 homers in 231 1/3 innings. He became the 4th Met in history to rack up 20 wins and his three loses were the fewest by a 20-game winner in the National League since 1951 when Brooklyn’s Preacher Roe posted a 22-3 mark. During May, Cone was 5-0 with a miserly 0.72 earned run average (ERA) and was chosen for the All-Star Game, wherein he pitched one perfect inning… and won eight straight at the end of the regular season… and in two starts in the 1988 NL Championship Series he went 1-1 and also appeared in one game as a reliever. Cone finished 3rd in the NL Cy Young Award behind Orel Hershiser of Los Angeles 23-8, 2.26 ERA and Danny Jackson of Cincinnati 22-8, 2.73 ERA. |
