Born in Leominister Massachusetts in 1856. Died at age 33 on January 16 1889. A hard playing catcher, Lew Brown was a much heralded player during the opening years of major league baseball. As noted in baseball history he played in at-that-time with the two major leagues, the National League and the American Association. The 5 ft 10.5 inch, 185-pound Lew Brown played in six different cities in an eight year major league career, signing with the highest bidder in most years. A career .254 hitter during the dead ball era, Lew Brown twice hit over .300. In 1878 he batted .305 with the Providence Grays of the National League and .304 for the 1882 Baltimore Orioles of the AA. During this era of about a 60 game major league schedules, Lew Brown led the league by striking out 33 times but also had 31 RBIs in 58 games in 1877 for the Boston Red Stockings later called the Braves. He followed that with 43 RBIs in 58 games the next year with the Providence Grays.
