A young high school baseball star in Venezuela, Miguel Cairo signed with the Chicago Cubs at age 16 in 1990. Traded to Toronto in 1996 he played 9 games in the majors and the rest in the minors with Syracuse. Traded back to the Cubs he excelled defensively at second base and hit .279 with 35 doubles at Iowa AAA, and was voted by his Iowa teammates as the MVP of thye team. Miguel Cairo played 29 games with the Cubs in 1997 and then was chosen by Tampa Bay as their first infield pick in the winter 1997 expansion draft. The Devil Rays selected him because they were looking for someone with high speed on the bases, good defensive second baseman and because they felt he would be able to hit major league pitching.
