Baseball Historian Biography

A sterling mound performer, Freddie Fitzsimmons is still highly regarded by our veteran fans. He won at least 15 games eight times, twenty games once, and collected 217 career victories. Nicknamed Fat Freddie, he posted a 20-9 record in 1928, while completing 16-of-32 games and led the league in winning percentage in 1930 by ringing up a 19-7 mark, a .731 pct. A knuckleballer, with a windmill-like windup, his pitches appeared to come across home plate like a up-and-down water slide and he could really hunker-down in clutch pitching situations. He also led the major leagues with a resounding 16-2 record in 1940 - a .889 winning pct. and led the league with 35 starts in '33 when he was 16-11. Although he never won a Series game, Fitzsimmons was the starting pitcher in four World Series Games.

Frederick Fitzsimmons career stats was a good hitting pitcher, he lined 14 career homers, and had 231 hits in 513 games, a .200 batting average... Manager Philadelphia Phillies 1943-45... Born in Mishawaka, Indiana
