Val Picinich was signed during baseball’s dead ball era by Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack and was used as a backup backstop his first two big league seasons, 1916-1917, before being traded to the Washington Senators in 1918. A right-handed free-swinger, Val Picinich compiled a .258 lifetime batting average, including a career-best .302 for Cincinnati in 1928. Seven times he hit over 10 doubles including 21 doubles twice with the Red Sox in 1923 and 1925.
