In 1950, his first year in the majors, Al led the American League with 37 Home Runs. Although he didn't duplicate this feat in 1951, the Navy veteran did rank fifth in Runs Batted In and hit 4 homers with the bases loaded to tie the major league record. Before coming up, he spent 5 years in the minors and hit over .300 each year. Nicknamed 'Flip', he was the state high school middleweight boxing champ of Florida in 1940.
