First Major League Home Run
Ross Barnes - 1876
Batting star, Ross Barnes, is credited with hitting the
first home run in the Organized Major Leagues. Barnes playing
for Spalding's Chicago Team (later became the Cubs), hit his
historic homer in 1876 and was drilled off of Cincinnati's
right-hander Bill "Cherokee" Fischer. This
was Barnes only homer of the year. Ross Barnes led the league
that year with a torrid .429 batting average and helped the
Chicago Team win the pennant.
