A major star in the Negro Leagues, Monte Irvin continued his red-hot batting upon joining Lou Durrocher and the New York Giants in 1949, and helped the Giants capture two NL pennants, 1951 and 1954. Monte Irvin batted a torrid .458 in the 1951 World Series vs the Yankees. He lined 11 hits in 24 at bats, including going 4-for-5 plus a steal of home in Game 1. The following photo of Monte Irvin and home run slugger Ralph Kiner is from baseballhistorian.com archives and comes from the 1952 SPORT Magazine. It was included in an article right before the 1952 All-Star Game. |
