Baseball Historian Biography

Recently voted the best third baseman in the history of baseball, Schmidt ranks seventh on the all-time home run list with 548.  He led the National League in homers a record eight times.  Schmidt walloped 35 homers a year, 11 times during his career. This Hall of Famer won 10 Gold Gloves Awards, is second in career assists per game, and third in double plays.  Seven times, Schmidt led the NL in assists, and that's a record.  Schmidt won the Most Valuable Player Award three times and had nine seasons when he knocked in 100 or more runs.  He walked over 100 times in seven different years.  Twice he hit a breathtaking four consecutive homers; a record he shares with Ralph Kiner.  Schmidt powered the Phillies in their quests for the pennants in the 70's and 80's.  Mike Schmidt's career.... 548 home runs, 1,506 runs scored; 1,595 RBI's, lifetime batting average .267
