Baseball Historian Biography

Warren Spahn won 363 lifetime games and only lost 245 and had a career ERA of 3.09. Spahn won 20 or more games in 13 different years. Led the league in strike outs from 1949-52. Won the Cy Young in 1957 when the Milwaukee Braves won the World Series over the New York Yankees. In 1947, Warren won 21 games and led the league in ERA . In 1948, Spahn and Johnny Sain's clutch pitching in Sept.'s pennant drive inspired the verse 'Spahn and Sain/ pray for rain'. The Boston Braves won their first pennant in 34 years, they each won one game in the world series but the Cleveland Indians won the series 4 games to 2. Spahn hit 35 career homers as a pitcher; still a NL record. He pitched on 3 pennant winning teams. This Hall of Famer spent 3 1/2 years in the army World War II and received a Bronze Star as well as a Purple Heart. In 1960, Warren Spahn no-hit the Phillies and in 1961, at age 40, he threw another no-hitter against the S.F. Giants. Spahn's 63 lifetime shutouts are still a NL record for left handed pitchers. 'A pitcher needs two pitches; one they are looking for and one to cross them up', Warren Spahn.
