An easy-going pitcher with a blazing fastball Bob Porterfield created sensational baseball news in 1953 by going 22-10, hurling an amazing 9 shutouts, posting an 3.35 ERA for a Washington Senator team that ended 76-76 in 5th place 23 1/2 games behind the pennant winning, New York Yankees. That season, Porterfield pitched 255 innings, led the league in wins, shutouts and in complete games (24) and was selected to 'The Sporting News' major league All-Star team. In 1952, Porterfield, although going 14-14, had a resounding year with a 2.72 ERA but he fell victim to a poor Senator offense that averaged only five hits and one run in his 14 loses. A sore arm starting in 1955, limited his pitching career although he did managed to toil in the majors until the end of '59. Bob Porterfield career: 87-97, ERA of 3.79, 318 G, 193 GS, 92 GC, 23 Shutouts, allowed only 1571 hits in 1568 innings, 572 Ks, 552 Walks. baseballhistorian.com |
